Malaysia is like two countries in one, cleaved in half by the South China Sea. While peninsula flaunts bustling cities, colonial architecture, misty tea plantations and chill-out islands, Malaysian Borneo hosts wild jungles of orangutans, granite peaks and remote tribes, along with some pretty spectacular diving. Throughout these two regions is an impressive variety of microcosms ranging from the space-age high-rises of Kuala Lumpur to the traditional longhouse villages of Sarawak.

What I love most about Singapore are the sharp and constant contrasts: smoky temples in the shadow of skyscrapers, luxe condos backing onto jungle, old-school shop houses housing secret cocktail dens. I can travel the world without ever leaving the island. One minute I’m in the ‘Hong Kong’ wet markets and malls of Chinatown, the next the ‘Mumbai’ street scenes of Little India, the next the red-light ‘Patpong, Bangkok’ district of Geylang. Dig deeper than the ‘sterile’ cliches and you’ll find a place more complex, contradictory and addictive than you might imagine. Even after countless sojourns, Asia’s little red dot never fails to make me swoon.i love you Singapore.

Thailand. The celestial world is a close confidant in this Buddhist nation, and religious devotion is colorful and ubiquitous. Gleaming temples and golden Buddhas frame both the rural and modern landscape. Ancient banyan trees are ceremoniously wrapped in sacred cloth to honor the resident spirits, while garland-festooned dashboards ward off traffic accidents.

It’s easy to say that the thing I love most about Thailand is Thai food. But then I’m reminded of that feeling of freedom during a motorcycle trip upcountry. And of the sensory overload of a busy morning market – or a night out in Bangkok. And of encounters with history and culture, the new and the old, at just about every turn. Did I mention the white-sand beaches, jungles, ancient ruins and Buddhist temples? Indeed, the food satisfies – but on second thought, Thailand offers so much more.
